What is the history of candle holders and why are they important?

I can't find anything on the history of candle holders, but there are a lot of resources on the history of candles.
Probably the need for candle holders was discovered very early in history, as they could easily fall over and cause a fire. Holders would be needed (as they are today) to keep them stable and out of reach of careless hands and flammable furnishings. In the days when candles (and torches, etc) were the only means of lighting, fire would be a huge danger. As time went on, hundreds of candles would be placed in brilliant chandeliers which hung from the ceiling to provide more light, and there would also be wall sconces and candleabra.
Mainly, of course, the holder would have been to prevent danger; they could also be very decorative and beautiful.
There have been instances in history where a lady's voluminous dress caught fire and she was either badly burnt or killed.
