How can I be sure my Glazed Pottery is aquarium safe?
I made a sculpture in college that I want to put in my fishtank, but I used three different types of glazes on it...all earthtones like red, brown, and green. I know that some glazes can release minerals that can be harmful to fish over time, is there any way I can tell that the glazes on my sculpture won't do that??
If you absolutely HAVE to put that thing in your fishtank, then I suggest you coat it with an inert material that won't harm your fish. Kind of like how rubber surrounds a wire and protects us from being shocked, you should get a clear glaze that is known to be safe for fish and coat it ten times.
I'm not sure if you have access to any industrial plants, but if you do, you might want to ask around and see what you can coat your pottery with. Melamine, maybe? No, that breaks down into ammonia. Ummm, I would look around too see what coatings are out there and are clear. Or just don't risk it.
